KatadataOTO – BYD has finally launched its first kei car outside of China. This was done at the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

According to a Carnewschina report on Thursday (30/10), the new product is named BYD Racco. Taken from the Japanese word meaning sea otter.

“The model, reportedly named BYD Racco, is expected to be available for order in Japan in the summer of 2026,” wrote the online media.

When viewed in detail, the BYD Racco features a compact and boxy design, typical of Japanese kei cars.

The BYD electric kei car appears to be painted in white. Then there are black accents on several of its pillars.

The front features a closed grille. It is then combined with two-layer Daytime Running Lights (DRL) that are integrated with the turn signals.

Moving to the lights, both the front and rear are smoked. Making the BYD kei car look quite sporty

Making it more interesting, the BYD Racco features a floating roof style. Giving a modern yet functional impression.

The Electric Vehicle (EV) is equipped with four doors, with a sliding model at the rear. It also has privacy glass.

However, the doors still use conventional handles. This manufacturer did not embed a flush model.

Meanwhile, the rear of the BYD Racco features vertical taillights, a rear wiper, and a license plate holder in the middle.

In addition, the BYD kei car also appears to be equipped with multi-spoke aluminum wheels painted in gray.

In terms of performance, the BYD Racco carries a 20 kWh battery. Allowing the electric car to travel 180 km on a single charge.

The electric four-wheeler is also equipped with an AC system with a heat pump for power efficiency, and supports DC fast charging up to 100 kW.

BYD claims the electric kei car is their first exclusive overseas design. It also reflects the company's philosophy of reducing the Earth's temperature by 1°C.

The price of the BYD Racco is 2.6 million yen, or equivalent to around Rp 275 million. This electric four-wheeler will challenge a number of other Japanese kei cars.

Such as the Honda N-Box, Suzuki Spacia, and Nissan Sakura. So it will be interesting to see how the Japanese public responds to the presence of a product from the manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China.
