KatadataOTO – Car sales in retail began to experience a slight increase in May 2025. The total figure was 61,339 units, up 7.6 percent from 57,030 units in April.

Meanwhile, when compared to the same period last year or May 2024, car sales are still 15 percent behind the previous achievement of 72,246 units.

Despite the slight increase, Gaikindo (Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries) said the sales figures were not yet satisfactory.

“Not as expected yet,” said Jongkie Sugiarto, Chairman I of Gaikindo, when contacted by KatadataOTO on Tuesday (10/05).

Wholesales, or distribution from factories to dealers, as of May 2025 experienced a significant increase compared to the previous month, from 51,205 units to 60,613 units, a growth of 18.4 percent.

In the top 10 rankings, Toyota continues to maintain its position as the leader.

Honda had to drop to fourth place after being overtaken by Mitsubishi, which recorded retail sales of 5,372 units. Chery took Hyundai's position in seventh place with sales of 2,067 units.

Mitsubishi has just released the latest versions of their flagship models, the Xpander and Xpander Cross facelift. Both are believed to be the trigger for their sales increase in May 2025.

Throughout May, the brands that experienced sales growth were Toyota, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Chery, Wuling, and Honda. Meanwhile, Hyundai, BYD, and Denza saw a decline.

Nevertheless, the presence of new models like the Suzuki Fronx and Honda HR-V has the potential to boost retail sales in June 2025.
