KatadataOTO – Although still the largest car manufacturer in Indonesia, PT Toyota Astra Motor admits that the country's automotive market is still full of challenges. This is because vehicle sales in 2025 experienced a decline compared to the achievements of the previous year.

This situation makes them hope the government will provide incentives for the automotive industry. Not only for hybrid and ICE but also for conventional technology vehicles.

“If we look at the market, the hope is indeed that it can be better than last year. So we hope there will be a stimulus not only for hybrids and EVs but also for ICE and PHEVs,” said Henry Tanoto, Vice President at PT. Toyota-Astra Motor (26/01)

According to him, with this stimulus, it is hoped that the Indonesian automotive market can recover.

“Because the important thing is to encourage the market so it can grow again in the future,” he later said.

It should be noted that Toyota has become the manufacturer with the highest sales in Indonesia. They lead the market in both wholesales and retail sales,

In 2025, Toyota recorded retail sales of 258,923 units, a decrease of 34,865 units compared to the previous year. At that time, they managed to sell 293,788 units, or 11.9 percent more.

Similarly, Toyota's market share experienced a decline from the previous 33 percent to only 31.1 percent.

Meanwhile, for wholesales, Toyota also experienced a significant correction. It was recorded that they were only able to release 250,431 units from the factory to dealers. That number is down 38,551 units or 33.4 percent lower than in 2024.

In that year, the manufacturer managed to record a shipment figure of 288,982 units. MPVs are still the most popular type of vehicle, contributing 59 percent of total sales.

The combination of the Toyota Kijang Innova Zenix and Reborn became the largest contributor with sales to consumers of 62,500 units throughout the year.

This decline also had an impact on the number of vehicles produced by Toyota during 2025. It was recorded that they were only able to produce 511,248 cars.

The pressure is expected to see an improvement in 2026, so that Indonesia can still be an attractive destination for global manufacturers.
