KatadataOTO – The situation across from the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery (TMP), South Jakarta, has become tense. This is due to the mob attack on two debt collectors (matel).
The police have revealed the suspected initial cause of the beating tragedy that occurred on Thursday (11/12) afternoon.
“From this afternoon until tonight, we have been handling a case that started with, as they are called, debt collectors, who wanted to collect on a motorcycle with indicated overdue credit payments,” said Kombes Nicolas Ary Lilipaly, South Jakarta Metro Police Chief, to Antara.
Ary revealed that the vehicle owner has not received a single penny to date. So he deployed two people to collect the debt.
However, the two people assigned to collect the bad vehicle loan debt were instead attacked by a mob, resulting in two deaths.
“One died at the scene and another died at the hospital,” Nicolas added.
In the incident, the group of the two victims demanded accountability. Meanwhile, local residents also hoped that the perpetrators of the attack would be handed over to the police immediately.
“We are trying to secure the residents here. So that the group does not act, because they are already planning to retaliate,” Nicolas asserted.
A number of police officers from the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Resort Police, Sector Police, and Mobile Brigade were deployed to secure the area.
In addition, they helped guard and coordinate with the South Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat).
This is because nine kiosks and six motorcycles were burned as a result of the two debt collectors' deaths in Kalibata. Then, an electric car was also engulfed in flames.
The police estimate the total losses from yesterday's arson attack reached Rp 273 million.
To date, the police are still pursuing the perpetrators of the mob attack on the debt collectors in Kalibata, and hunting down the vandals in the area in front of the Heroes' Cemetery.
“It is still under investigation, we are still conducting an investigation,” Nicolas concluded.
As of Friday morning, the police have set up a guard post. They are ensuring that there are no follow-up clashes.
Thus, it is hoped that this will make the community around the crime scene (TKP) feel safer.
Then the public does not need to worry and can pass through the streets in the Pancoran area, South Jakarta.
“Essentially, we will work hard to handle these two cases. The first is the assault resulting in death and serious injury, the second is the case of vandalism or arson,” Nicolas concluded his statement.
