KatadataOTO – The proposal for big bikes (large motorcycles) to be allowed on toll roads has resurfaced. This time, it was proposed by the Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI).
The above discourse was conveyed in a meeting with the Minister of Transportation, the Minister of Public Works, the Head of BMKG, the Head of Basarnas, and the Head of the National Police Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas Polri) on Thursday (23/1).
“Just a suggestion, so far we've seen that escort motorcycles can enter. If I may say, they are nothing different from other big bikes,” said Andi Iwan Darmawan Aras, Deputy Chairman of Commission V of the DPR RI, on the Parliament TV YouTube account.
According to him, there are several considerations for why he proposed that big bikes be allowed on toll roads. For example, the potential for new revenue.
So that income doesn't only come from four-wheeled vehicle users. But owners of large-engine motorcycles also contribute.
“Then, I think it will not have a bad impact on the toll road,” continued the politician from the Gerindra party.
Andi explained that big bikes do not have a very large weight. Not the same as other types of vehicles, such as logistics transport.
“Of course, it depends on the road conditions, but in my opinion, big bikes tend not to cause damage, we just need to create the regulations. How to ensure orderly riding (on the freeway),” Andi affirmed.
For your information, two-wheeled vehicles are indeed prohibited from crossing on toll roads. As stated in Article 38 of Government Regulation (PP) Number 44 of 2009.
It is explained that freeways are intended for users of four-wheeled vehicles or more.
Looking at the regulation above, it can be confirmed that motorcycles are prohibited from using this facility.
Then it can also be seen in Government Regulation Number 15 of 2005 that this road is only intended for cars.
However, the Government made a change through PP Number 44 of 2009 by adding one paragraph to Article 38. It is explained that motorcycles can cross, but only in places that have a special road section.
"On freeways, special lanes for two-wheeled vehicles can be provided, physically separated from the toll road intended for four-wheeled vehicles or more,” reads the regulation.
Seeing this, only the Bali-Mandara toll road can be crossed by motorcycles. Then, those who want to pass must ride their vehicles at a speed of 25-40 km per hour.
