How Toyota Eco Youth Participants Reduce Fuel Consumption Locally

“We collect the blue swimming crab shell waste, clean it, then sun-dry it for two days. After that, it goes into an oven for two hours at 60 degrees Celsius, then we grind or crush it,” he said.

After being crushed or sieved, the ground material is further optimized until it finally becomes chitosan powder.

Based on research, the chitosan powder can generate electrical energy when mixed with seawater. 

The seawater mixed with chitosan is put into a partitioned box that serves as an energy source. Each partition is filled with 120 liters of seawater and two grams of chitosan, producing 1.3 volts of power.

The power is channeled through a cable to a container box, then stored in a used battery from an emergency lamp. 

“The battery can then be used to turn on a lamp,” explained Shadeq.

The innovation that won the Toyota Eco Youth competition can be charged in 12 hours and can supply power to a lamp for 10 hours.

In the future, he said the findings will be sold as a product to fishermen in need.

“We will create an agenda with the community and negotiate to market our product. Because the community is very much in agreement with using it,” said Fauzan Yudha Azhary Harahap, a school representative on the same occasion.
