Electric Car Sales Start to Struggle Without Incentives

BYD still leads among the top 10 best-selling Chinese car brands in January-June 2025, followed by Chery and Wuling.
KatadataOTO – The automotive market continues to be enlivened by various newcomers from China. However, BYD (Build Your Dreams) remains the leader to this day.
Throughout the first semester of 2025, or the January-June period, the Chinese automotive giant successfully recorded retail sales (distribution from dealers to consumers) of 13,705 units.
They recorded the highest sales in April 2025. For the first time this year, BYD's retail figures surpassed 3,000 units.
So far, BYD has only introduced two new models for Indonesian consumers. There is the Sealion 7 and then an updated version of their flagship electric sedan in Indonesia, the Seal.
In May, the Sealion 7 became the backbone of BYD's domestic sales and recorded the highest wholesales (distribution from factory to dealers) compared to other BYD models.
Following in second place is Chery. This brand has been aggressively bringing in various models for customers in the country.
The newest is the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Chery Tiggo 8 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid). It is priced at around Rp 519 million, far below other PHEVs already on the road.
Not long after, the Omoda 5 crossover SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) was renamed to C5, received additional features, and had its price reduced.
The electric version followed suit. The Omoda E5 was renamed Chery E5, its electric motor is smaller, and its price was cut by nearly Rp 100 million.
After Chery, there is Wuling. They currently offer three EV (Electric Vehicle) models: Air ev, BinguoEV, and Cloud EV.
All three are locally assembled or have CKD (Completely Knocked Down) status. However, it seems that without the presence of new models, Wuling's sales will still remain below BYD's.
Interestingly, in fourth place is a premium sub-brand from BYD, Denza. Despite only bringing in the Denza D9, its sales figures reached 5,093 units throughout 2025, successfully entering the top five best-selling Chinese car brands.
Several other newcomer brands like Aion and GWM are also in the top 10 best-selling Chinese car brands for the January-June 2025 period.
For the full list, here we summarize the 10 best-selling Chinese car brands from Gaikindo (Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries) data. These figures represent retail sales, i.e., distribution from dealers to consumers.
