KatadataOTO – BYD Indonesia recently registered a new car in the country. This was discovered on the official website of the DJKI (Directorate General of Intellectual Property).
The prospective new product from the Chinese manufacturer is suspected to be the BYD M9 PHEV.
They spoke up when asked about the arrival of the environmentally friendly four-wheeled vehicle.
"Regarding the brand registration, it is a separate part of the product introduction strategy," said Luther T. Panjaitan, Head of Public and Government Relations at PT BYD Motor Indonesia in Jakarta some time ago
Luther explained that this step was taken by a special division or department at BYD, such as the development and legal teams.
This was done so they would not lose the patent rights for the new product name in the country.
"To ensure that BYD's intellectual property rights are secured first," Luther continued.
He said that they learned from the Denza name dispute case in the country, which had already been registered by someone else.
Therefore, they chose to register the BYD M9 PHEV patent with the DJKI.
"Because intellectual property in Indonesia is 'first to file.' So we also ensure that the documents are secure," Luther emphasized.
Unfortunately, Luther did not provide much information about the BYD M9 PHEV registered in Indonesia. Including whether there are plans to launch it in the near future.
As a reminder, the BYD M9 PHEV design was registered in the Official Gazette of Industrial Designs No. 34/DI/2025, announced on June 3, 2025, with application number A00202406735 by BYD Company Limited, located in Shenzhen, China.
The BYD M9 PHEV is the name for the BYD Xia car for the global market.
The BYD M9 uses BYD's PHEV technology, named DM-i. Its engine has a capacity of 1,500 cc with a maximum power of 154 hp, and is supported by a 268 hp electric motor.
Two battery capacity options are available: 20.4 kWh and 36.6 kWh. Each has a claimed pure electric range of 100 km-180 km based on the CLTC testing method).
This potential sibling to the Denza D9 has the opportunity to become BYD's first PHEV in the country with a more competitive price tag.
For comparison, the pure electric Denza D9 is sold for around IDR 950 million OTR (On The Road) in Jakarta.
