The naming of Atto 1 is believed to signal the arrival of Atto 2, completing BYD's electrification lineup in Indonesia.
KatadataOTO – The Seagull is presented in Indonesia as the BYD Atto 1. The compact electric car will be a new competitor to the Wuling Air ev, which is sold at prices starting from Rp 195 million.
There are several considerations for BYD using the name Atto 1 for the Seagull specifically for the Indonesian market. One of them is the global naming strategy.
“We see from research in several Asia-Pacific countries and also Indonesia, that these names provide good and easy acceptance,” said Luther T. Panjaitan, Head of PR & Government Relations for BYD Motor Indonesia in Tangerang, Friday (25/07).
Therefore, BYD decided to use a vehicle series name that is already used in the country, such as Atto.
In the Atto series, BYD already has a compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) called the Atto 3 with a price in the Rp 300 million range.
Interestingly, in the global market, there is also the BYD Atto 2. Recently, this model was launched first in the Malaysian market.
“It will become clear when we have launched several other products with the same name, using a different number at the end,” said Luther.
However, he was still reluctant to comment on whether the next model would be the BYD Atto 2.
“(The numbering) usually defines the types, character, and leveling of the vehicle. But most importantly, this is a global strategy and makes it more easily accepted,” Luther emphasized.
For your information, the BYD Atto 2 is sold as the Yuan Up in China. After debuting in Thailand, this model was launched in Malaysia, filling the gap between the Dolphin and the Atto 3.
In terms of dimensions, its size is below the Atto 3. It is more compact, as well as boxy and sporty.
The BYD Atto 2 is equipped with a 51.15 kWh battery, claimed to produce 174 hp and 290 Nm of torque.
Equipped with a single electric motor and front-wheel drive (FWD), the Atto 2 can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds.
Meanwhile, the range of the Atto 2 on a single charge is 350 km, based on the WLTP testing method.
