The Hybrid BYD Shark is getting closer to Indonesia, having debuted in Thailand with a price of approximately 800 million Rupiah.
KatadataOTO – BYD officially launched the pickup PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) Shark 6 in Thailand, specifically at the BIMS (Bangkok International Motor Show) 2025 event.
BYD Shark 6 is marketed in several other countries under the name Shark. The double cabin pickup is touted as a new competitor to the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, and Mitsubishi Triton.
Thailand itself is indeed one of the countries with the largest pickup market in the world. This is because there are many supporting policies and high demand for double cabins in the land of the white elephant.
The BYD Shark 6 uses a 1,500 cc Turbo engine combined with a 29.58 kWh BYD Blade Battery.
The large-capacity battery increases fuel efficiency. With a full tank of gasoline and a full battery, the BYD Shark 6 is claimed to be able to travel up to 800 km.
The combination of a conventional engine and two electric motors embedded in the BYD Shark 6 allows it to produce 430 hp and a peak torque of 650 Nm.
This becomes an attractive option for Thai consumers, considering there are not many environmentally friendly or hybrid technology pickup options.
Besides BYD, GWM has offered the Poer Sahar hybrid pickup. Its engine has a larger capacity at 2,000 cc hybrid, but it is only equipped with one electric motor.
Reported from Carnewschina, Monday (31/03), the BYD Shark 6 will be marketed for 1.69 million Baht. This figure is equivalent to around 824.8 million Rupiah when converted.
The arrival of the BYD Shark 6 in the Thai market could be a signal that this model is approaching the Indonesian market.
Other Chinese brands like Chery have started to introduce PHEVs through the Chery Tiggo 8 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid).
Supported by incentives, it is not impossible that the BYD Shark 6 will be introduced to the Indonesian public.
Moreover, the BYD Shark brand has previously been registered at the PKDI (Intellectual Property Database). The name is listed with application number DID2024029221 on March 1, 2024, by BYD Company Limited.
If it enters the country, the BYD Shark will be the first double cabin pickup with PHEV technology.
