Chinese car manufacturer Changan is confirmed to continue selling cars in Indonesia despite its absence from GIIAS 2025.
KatadataOTO – A number of new models are confirmed to be present to enliven the GIIAS (Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show) 2025 exhibition. However, the new brand Changan will be absent.
It should be noted that Changan officially entered Indonesia in February 2025 as a result of a partnership with the Indomobil Group.
Although there has been no news for a while, Changan is confirmed to still be selling cars to Indonesian consumers according to the initial plan, which is at the end of the year.
“The last I knew, there was GWM, then Changan,” said Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy for Coordination of Basic Infrastructure at the Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta recently.
He was reluctant to elaborate in more detail which brands are confirmed to enter Indonesia throughout 2025.
There are still other Chinese manufacturers reportedly planning to sell in the country, but they will not be present at GIIAS 2025. Such as Leapmotor.
However, he confirmed that the government is open to the arrival of automotive brands, especially if the manufacturers focus on electrified or environmentally friendly vehicles.
“The important thing is that in the future they produce in Indonesia, (with) TKDN (Local Component Level) so that our industry continues to grow,” said Rachmat.
For your information, Changan in Indonesia is said to want to enter the entry-level car segment because it can target more consumers.
Consumers in that class are considered to have potential. So Changan wants to try to take advantage of this opportunity.
“Our direction is still towards the low segment (cars) for Changan,” said Andrew Nasuri, Director of PT Indomobil Sukses Internasional in Jakarta on a different occasion some time ago.
Not only passenger vehicles, Changan is also said to be eyeing the commercial vehicle segment. Considering the manufacturer does not only focus on passenger vehicles.
It will have CKD (Completely Knocked Down) or locally assembled status, Andrew emphasized that many preparations need to be made.
“GIIAS 2025 is still a bit difficult (to launch a product) because there is R&D (Research and Development) that needs to be done. Maybe as a brand it's possible, but not yet for a model for Indonesia,” he asserted.
