The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has become a widely discussed topic after it caught fire in Medan, allegedly belonging to the Governor of North Sumatra.
KatadataOTO – After a long period of silence due to the onslaught of Chinese cars in 2025, the name Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has recently become a hot topic of conversation again.
This is because on January 7, 2026, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N unit was completely burned in a workshop on Jalan Sei Asahan, Padang Bulan, Medan City.
It briefly caught the public's attention because the unit was suspected to be registered under the name of a company owned by Bobby Nasution, the Governor of North Sumatra.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N electric car was known to be parked at the workshop. Local residents then reported to the fire department that there was a fire around 10 a.m. that day.
The process of extinguishing the fire, which was believed to have originated from the battery, was said to be quite difficult because the flames would not go out.
Fortunately, the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire in a relatively short time of 30 minutes.
The cause has not yet been revealed. However, it is known that when the fire occurred, the car was parked and not in the process of being charged.
This is different from the case of a suspected Wuling BinguoEV car that recently occurred in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. That car was being charged when it then caught fire, causing five people to lose their lives.
The preliminary suspicion is that the car's battery was experiencing thermal runaway, where the temperature of the power storage unit increased.
Thermal runaway can occur for several reasons. For example, battery damage, extreme environmental temperatures, or the habit of excessive charging, also known as overcharging.
Speaking of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, the car is the highest variant of the Ioniq 5 series marketed domestically. However, its popularity has dimmed after many options for Chinese-made cars entered the market.
The price of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N at its launch was Rp 1.3 billion. Upon investigation, this model, which debuted in 2024, has recorded zero wholesale units (distribution from factory to dealer) since August.
Meanwhile, other variants are still being delivered normally. The type with the largest contribution is the Ioniq 5 Signature Extended, also the highest variant, with 667 units delivered throughout 2025.
Although the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has not been supplied since August 2025, the South Korean manufacturer has not yet confirmed whether its sales will continue in 2026.
Total: 20 units
