Wholesales of electric cars in Indonesia have continued to grow since 2020, increasing significantly thanks to Chinese cars.
KatadataOTO – Electric cars have recorded quite positive growth in Indonesia. In 2025, the number even skyrocketed to 103,931 units.
Upon further investigation, the growth of electric cars began to be seen in 2020, although the models were quite limited at that time.
According to data from the Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), wholesales (distribution from dealers to consumers) of electric cars were recorded at 125 units with a zero percent market share.
For context, at that time, some of the electric car models sold to consumers were Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Lexus UX 300e.
Slowly in 2021, the number began to increase to 687 units, achieving a 0.1 percent market share.
Then electric car wholesales experienced a massive surge in 2022, reaching 10,327 units and securing a one percent market share.
It should be noted that in 2022, PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) officially released the latest version of the Ioniq series, the Ioniq 5.
The model was offered at a price of IDR 700 million and above. The units were already locally assembled at the PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) facility.
Then came Wuling's first domestic electric car, the Air ev. Just like the Ioniq 5, this model was assembled domestically.
