MG Not Yet Interested in Bringing Cheap Electric Cars to Indonesia

With many rivals in the market, MG is not yet going to introduce an affordable electric car priced around Rp 200 million to the Indonesian market.

KatadataOTO - Affordable electric cars or models with a competitive price tag of around 200 million IDR seem to be one of the attractions for domestic consumers.

The presence of electric cars in that price range made Electric Vehicle (EV) sales record positive sales in 2025.

Although there are many opportunities, the Chinese manufacturer MG has not yet entered that potential segment.

"When we talk about cheap, it's sometimes relative, but MG is committed in Indonesia to offering competitive products," said Hary Kurniawan, Head of Marketing MG Motor Indonesia in Jakarta, Friday (30/01).

Currently, MG electric car prices are offered starting from around 400 million IDR on the road in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, other Chinese manufacturers such as BYD, Seres, Changan, and Wuling are already playing in that segment.

The lowest BYD Atto 1 type is sold for around 199 million IDR, significantly boosting their sales toward the end of the year.

"Offering a product is not just about seeing a low price. We also have to see what impact it has on users," said Hary.

Speaking about the target consumers, MG focuses on vehicle users who want to switch to electric cars.

"If we look overall, EV users are indeed mostly, we say, focused in big cities," said Hary.

Hary then revealed that electric car users generally look for a second vehicle for daily mobility in urban areas.

"Currently, we see that growth opportunities there still exist, quite large. That's why MG focuses development there," said Hary.

As a reference, MG's domestic sales can still be said to be far behind other competitors targeting the upper-mid segment such as BYD.

Throughout 2025, MG recorded retail sales (distribution from dealers to consumers) of 1,856 units. Meanwhile, BYD reached 44,342 units in the same period.

MG's lowest sales were recorded in September 2025, delivering only 92 units to consumers.

The highest sales figure was achieved in February 2025, with 243 units.

MG's retail sales figures for 2026 are worth watching. Considering they just launched a new product early this year and are preparing several more models for release.

The newest model MG S5 EV will be officially sold at the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS 2026) on February 5.
