Airbag issues in several models, Jeep urges consumers to get checks at authorized service centers.
KatadataOTO – Jeep, currently under PT Indomobil National Distributor, is starting to strengthen its presence in the country.
In addition to expanding its dealer network, Jeep Indonesia has announced a recall for several models that may have airbag issues.
Jeep has confirmed that all affected customers can have their airbags replaced at official Jeep dealerships.
This service is available to all Jeep customers, including those who purchased from the previous Sole Brand Agent (ATPM) or General Importers (IU).
“If it's still under warranty, please come to the workshop. There is a free airbag replacement for certain models,” said Andry Oktavianus, After Sales Department Head of Jeep Indonesia in North Jakarta recently.
However, he was reluctant to specify the models and the number of units that might be affected in Indonesia.
“The details can be seen on our website. Just enter the chassis number (to find out) whether the customer is eligible for an airbag replacement or not,” said Andry.
Quoted from the official Mopar website, Saturday (28/06), there are four brands under the Stellantis group whose units are potentially being recalled due to potential airbag issues, namely Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram.
Specifically for Jeep, the affected model is the Jeep Wrangler from 2007 to 2016. Therefore, it is certain that this does not affect the 2025 production units currently marketed by Jeep Indonesia.
Jeep customers affected by the airbag replacement, according to Andry, are 'past' customers who purchased their units before Jeep was taken over by PT Indomobil National Distributor.
Recalls for potential Takata airbag issues in Jeeps have been conducted periodically since 2015. In Indonesia, there was a case of an airbag failing to deploy in a Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2021.
The owner was reportedly not focused while driving and ended up hitting a container truck on the toll road. However, not a single airbag deployed in the incident, so he filed a complaint with PT Das Indonesia Motor, the Jeep brand holder at that time.
For your information, in 2015-2016, Takata Corporation informed the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) that many of their airbags were defective. The number of affected airbags reached a staggering 67 million units.
Owners are advised to immediately have their vehicles checked at an official workshop to avoid potential dangers caused by airbags failing to deploy or even exploding when the vehicle is involved in an accident.
