Toyota is reportedly no longer collaborating with Subaru on the development of the GR86, and this time will partner with Mazda.
KatadataOTO – The Toyota GR86 is a twin model to the Subaru BRZ, developed by both brands with several differences. However, rumors are circulating that the latest GR86 will be developed with Mazda.
Reports from local Japanese media reveal that Mazda engineers are involved in the development project for the latest generation Toyota GR86.
It is likely that Subaru is no longer involved in the development of the GR86. This time, it will rely entirely on Toyota, accompanied by a project leader from Mazda.
This opens up the possibility for Mazda to launch a twin product to the GR86 in the future, if the rumors about the collaboration are true.
Speaking of the latest generation Toyota GR86, it is mentioned that the platform used is completely new and lighter.
However, other aspects seem to remain the same. The engine is placed at the front and uses RWD (Rear Wheel Drive).
However, since it is no longer partnering with Subaru, the 2,500 cc boxer engine previously used with the Subaru BRZ will be abandoned.
Several sources reveal that the GR86 will likely use an engine developed by Toyota. It will be a 1,600 cc three-cylinder, similar to the one used in the GR Yaris and GR Corolla.
A similar engine was once used in the rally version of the GR86, the GR86 Rally Legacy Concept, capable of producing a peak power of 300 hp.
For your information, in mid-2024, rumors about the end of the Subaru and Toyota partnership began to surface. Moreover, it is reported that the brand with the T logo is interested in introducing a hybrid GR86 using a 1,600 cc engine.
If Toyota adds an electric motor to the GR86, the estimated total power is claimed to reach 350 hp, approaching the output of the GR Supra, which occupies the segment above it.
The Toyota GR86 is still sold in Indonesia with a price tag of IDR 1.02 billion for the manual transmission or IDR 1.06 billion for the automatic transmission, on the road Jakarta. Meanwhile, the Subaru BRZ is offered at a price of IDR 920 million.
PT TAM (Toyota Astra Motor) also offers other GR Pure models in the country as demand is said to be quite high. Besides the GR86, there is the GR Supra at IDR 2.26 billion.
Then there is the facelifted GR Yaris with automatic transmission at IDR 1.16 billion and the all-new GR Corolla, offered at around IDR 1.36 billion.
Toyota has also confirmed the arrival of a new GR Pure model in the country. There are many possibilities, but interestingly, this time they intend to bring in a car with special racing specifications that is not legal for road use.
