KatadataOTO – Suzuki Motor Corporation has become the manufacturer importing the most cars to Japan in June 2025. The company surpassed Mercedes-Benz Group AG, which has long been the largest importer.

They rely on the Jimny Nomade and several other small SUVs produced in India. The number of cars brought in reached 4,780 units, a 230-fold increase from the same period the previous year.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Suzuki has become Japan's largest car importer. The manufacturer with the S logo had also achieved this in April 2025.

Suzuki's record is even more interesting because their global production numbers are arguably not as high as other manufacturers like Honda and Toyota.

“Japanese consumers don't really care if a vehicle is produced in Thailand, India, or Japan if they want a specific car," said Takeshi Miyao, an analyst at Automotive Consultancy Carnorama.

It should be noted that the Jimny Nomade is a five-door SUV that has been launched in several countries. Upon its arrival in Japan, the car immediately received 50,000 orders.

Even though Suzuki had set an initial monthly sales target of 1,200 units. The situation led them to stop taking orders after four days due to extremely high demand.

Suzuki plans to increase the production of the Jimny Nomade in India starting in July so that the export volume to Japan can be larger.

Not only the Jimny Nomade, they will also import several other SUVs from India. The Suzuki Fronx is even planned to go on sale in October 2025.

It should be noted that Suzuki is projected to sell at least 20 million units by 2047. They are also targeting a 50 percent market share by Maruti Suzuki India Ltd by 2030.

Besides Japan, another market for the five-door Suzuki Jimny from India is Indonesia. The demand for this model is also considered high.

Based on Gaikindo data, the wholesale figures for the five-door Suzuki Jimny from January to May 2025 were 674 units. This number will certainly continue to grow, considering that the automotive market usually sees an increase in the second half of the year.
