KatadataOTO – Toyota Motor officially became the world's best-selling car manufacturer in 2024 with vehicle sales reaching 10.8 million. Thanks to this, they have successfully defended their title for five consecutive years.
However, looking at the sales figures, they actually experienced a 3.7 percent decrease compared to last year. Pressure from Daihatsu and Hino has become a challenge for them to maintain their position.
Most of the decline was caused by slumping demand in Japan. The manufacturer faced various problems, including certification tests that involved Daihatsu.
Meanwhile, Toyota and Lexus sales also recorded total sales of 10.2 million units. That number is down 1.4 percent from the previous year.
Meanwhile, the second position is occupied by the Volkswagen Group. The German manufacturer experienced a sales decrease of 2.3 percent, selling only about 9 million units throughout 2024.
They experienced considerable pressure due to a price war in China. In addition, the manufacturer also faces challenges in its own country.
In Indonesia, Toyota's retail sales recorded 293,788 units, capturing 33 percent of the national market. This record is lower than the achievement in the same period last year, which reached 325,395 units or equivalent to 32.6 percent of the total market.
Meanwhile, for wholesales, the manufacturer was only able to sell 288,982 units, capturing 33.4 percent of the market. This figure is smaller than last year's achievement of 336,777 units, which gave Toyota a 33.5 percent share of the total market.
Of that total, the Toyota Kijang Innova became the best-selling model with wholesales reaching 63,676 units. The second position was then filled by the Toyota Avanza with sales of 55,838 units.
Toyota's third best-selling model is the Calya, which recorded wholesales of 39,909 units throughout 2024. Meanwhile, the Rush became the manufacturer's best-selling SUV, having sold 31,753 units in the same period.
The Agya rounds out Toyota's top five best-selling models. The car, which is in the LCGC segment, recorded wholesales of 19,795 units.
