KatadataOTO –  LCGC (Low Cost Green Car) was first introduced in Indonesia in 2013 through the Toyota and Daihatsu product duo, namely the Agya-Ayla. Both became part of a government program for affordable, fuel-efficient cars.

The affordable price of LCGCs was, of course, achieved from the start through a specific tax scheme. Meanwhile, fuel efficiency is achieved through a compact power source capacity  (1,000 cc-1,200 cc) with various engine systems such as compression ratio and ignition, including low exhaust emissions.

With Toyota's development in pushing for efficiency and environmental friendliness through hybrid engines, the question arises whether it is possible for the LCGC class to adopt this technology?

Masahiko Maeda, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Toyota Motor Asia, gave a direct answer during the Q&A session at the Asia Media Briefing ahead of the Japan Mobility Show (JMS) 2025 in Tokyo, Japan, (November 28, 2025). He emphasized various aspects, including the current condition of the LCGC market in Indonesia.

"It seems difficult to bring a hybrid engine to the LCGC class. This is mainly because this class is very price-sensitive," he explained.

He also added that other solutions are being developed by Toyota, such as conducting studies on more affordable hybrids. Additionally, they are also in continuous communication with the Indonesian government, with the aim of finding the best path for the LCGC class.

LCGC Price Stability

In the final sales period of 2025, as reported by KatadataOTO, LCGC selling prices remained stable. This means that so far, there have been no adjustments or increases.

For example, the Agya 1.2 E MT is still sold for IDR 173.2 million. Meanwhile, the Agya Stylix 1.2 G CVT can be purchased this month for IDR 200.6 million.

The price for the Toyota Calya 1.2 E MT STD Low remains at IDR 167 million. Meanwhile, for the highest trim, the Calya 1.2 G AT is priced at IDR 192.6 million.
