KatadataOTO – Toyota is reportedly developing 15 electric cars to be launched by 2027. This number already includes Lexus-branded models.
Not only that, they are even rumored to have set a target to produce 1 million EVs per year during that period. To achieve this, Toyota will implement various strategies, including adding electric vehicle production facilities.
According to Reuters, Toyota currently has only five self-developed electric models. Production is only carried out in Japan and China.
Therefore, the United States, Thailand, and Argentina are touted to become new electric vehicle production bases for Toyota. These three locations are considered quite profitable as they can avoid risks related to import tariffs, currency exchange rates, and delivery times.
Unfortunately, Toyota has not yet officially announced these plans. The Japanese manufacturer is still striving to produce 800,000 electric car units in 2026.
Meanwhile, in 2024, Toyota has only sold around 140,000 electric cars globally. Although an increase from the previous year, this number is still less than 2 percent of its total global sales of 10 million units.
The commitment to introduce more electric vehicles is actually already a global strategy. Toyota Indonesia has even affirmed its commitment to launch a new model this year.
“In the future, there are indeed plans to bring new electric cars to Indonesia, but I cannot provide the details yet,” said Anton Jimmi Suwandy, who was then the Marketing Director of Toyota Astra Motor, to KatadataOTO (10/03).
Although not explained in detail, it does not rule out the possibility that production will be done locally. This is because the government has provided various incentives for companies that manufacture EVs in the country.
They also stated they will produce hybrid vehicles in a more popular segment. It is hoped that sales of electrified cars will improve in the future.
