KatadataOTO – In the era of electrification, Toyota is striving to maintain the continuity of its gasoline-powered vehicle lineup in the automotive market.

Recently, Toyota was observed filing trademark patents for GR MR2 and GR MR-S. The MR2 itself refers to a sports coupe model that was born in 1984.

Reported by Carscoops, the GR MR2 trademark was registered by Toyota with the Japan Patent Office on November 25, 2025, followed by the GR MR-S name in Australia.

It seems this refers to the same model with different naming for the global market.

Unfortunately, Toyota is still keeping information about the MR2 tightly under wraps. However, many believe the GR MR2 will be introduced to consumers within the next two years.

For your information, the first generation of the Toyota MR2 was produced from 1984 to 1989. However, upon entering its third generation, its name changed to MR2 Spyder, and outside of Japan, it was called the MR2 Roadster.

The third-generation MR2 was also the final generation of the classic product. The model was quietly discontinued by Toyota in 2007.

The iconic design of the MR2 is believed to be used again for the GR series, or Toyota's high-performance lineup.

The arrival of the GR MR2 will complete the series, which currently includes the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and GR Supra.

The MR2 is known as a 2-seater sports car with rear-wheel drive (RWD).

Its iconic design and capable performance earned the MR2 the nickname of a budget Ferrari.

There is much speculation regarding the appearance of the GR MR2. Rumors of the MR2's rebirth resurfaced after Toyota introduced the FT-Se, or Future Toyota Sports Electric, at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

Interestingly, this model is no longer gasoline-powered, but has become a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), or a pure electric car.

Given the high consumer enthusiasm for Toyota's high-performance lineup, there is a strong chance the GR MR2 will soon be unveiled to the public, either as a prototype or a concept car.

In Indonesia, Toyota sells several GR products to consumers, such as the GR Supra and GR Yaris. Their prices are in the range of Rp 1.1 billion and above.
