Following its registration in Indonesia, the BYD M9 PHEV MPV is reportedly set to be sold in various countries soon.
KatadataOTO – Not long ago, BYD launched an MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) with PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) technology, namely the BYD Xia.
At a glance, its appearance looks like the premium electric MPV, the Denza D9. But upon closer inspection, there are a number of differences, such as in the fascia design.
The BYD Xia was introduced in January 2025 and is offered at a price of 249,800 yuan or around IDR 553.7 million.
The latest news is that the BYD Xia PHEV will be sold to the global market under the name BYD M9. Reported by Carnewschina, Tuesday (10/05), the M9 name was revealed when the model was displayed at a BYD press conference specifically for international media.
One unit of the BYD Xia MPV displayed at the event was seen using a license plate with the words BYD M9.
This naming was likely done to facilitate marketing and promotion in a number of countries such as Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Thailand. This is because the M9 is the flagship model of the M series, which in Indonesia is already represented by the M6.
Based on KatadataOTO's search, the car suspected to be the BYD M9 PHEV has also been registered by the manufacturer on the DJKI (Directorate General of Intellectual Property) website.
The design is listed in the Official Gazette of Industrial Designs No. 34/DI/2025, announced on June 3, 2025, with application number A00202406735 by BYD Company Limited, located in Shenzhen, China.
It is not yet known for sure when the BYD M9 will launch in Indonesia. If it arrives, the model will be the second PHEV from China after the Chery Tiggo 8 CSH (Chery Super Hybrid).
The BYD M9 uses BYD's PHEV technology named DM-i. Its engine has a capacity of 1,500 cc with a maximum power of 154 hp, and is supported by a 268 hp electric motor.
Two battery capacity options are available, namely 20.4 kWh and 36.6 kWh. Each has a claimed pure electric range of 100 km-180 km based on the CLTC testing method).
This potential sibling of the Denza D9 has the opportunity to become BYD's first PHEV in the country with a more competitive price tag. For comparison, the pure electric Denza D9 is sold for around IDR 950 million OTR (On The Road) Jakarta.
