KatadataOTO – Accidents involving motorcycles that result in fatalities often occur on the road. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) says it is still difficult to take part in in-depth investigations.

For this reason, the KNKT recently proposed a change to the regulation governing this matter, namely Government Regulation Number 62 of 2013 concerning Transportation Accident Investigation.

So motorcycle accidents can be investigated more deeply and their causes can be found.

“We have just proposed a change in Government Regulation 62, so we can get involved. We are changing the wording so that it covers recurring accidents on certain roads, vehicle types, brands, models, and companies,” said Ahmad Wildan, Senior Investigator at KNKT in Tangerang some time ago.

According to him, the change in the regulation will later allow the KNKT to have more authority in investigating motorcycle accidents.

He emphasized that the proposed rule change has been submitted to the government. It is still uncertain when it will take effect.

“So far, it has been rather difficult for us to get involved, because we mostly handle accidents involving buses and trucks,” he said.

Motorcycle Accident Fatalities

Data from the National Police Traffic Corps shows that motorcycle accidents claim the most lives, specifically 1,326,295 drivers and 3,242,713 passengers. The total reaches 4.5 million people.

The number above is far from other types of accidents. Minibuses, for example, claimed 125,246 drivers and 306,585 passengers.

This certainly deserves the attention of all parties and stakeholders. In addition to regulations, user education needs to be intensified, considering that accidents often occur due to human negligence.

Motorcycles are the mode of transportation most widely used by the public for several factors. Such as prices that tend to be more affordable compared to four-wheeled vehicles.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) records that the motorcycle population is currently at least 132 million units spread throughout Indonesia.

They are also flexible for mobility in congested urban areas. Finding a parking space is also not difficult.
