KatadataOTO – The Provincial Government (Pemprov) of DKI Jakarta plans to re-promote emission tests for motor vehicles. This step will begin early in the year to anticipate an increase in air pollution.
Moreover, the dry season is expected to arrive in May 2025, so preparations must be made starting now.
"May to August usually marks the beginning of the dry season, so the potential for increased intensity of air pollution is higher. So, don't prepare for it just before those months, but start from now," said Deftrianov, Head of the Development and Environment Division, DKI Jakarta Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), as reported by Antara (23/01).
He added that in January 2025, the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency (DLH) will provide emission testing services every day at their office. In addition, activities will also be carried out outside the office, namely at Satya Negara Indonesia University and the DKI Jakarta Department of Industry, Trade, Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises (PPKUKM).
Not only that, Deftrianov also emphasized that his party is working to make the mandatory emission test not only apply to Jakarta residents. The DKI Provincial Government is trying to ensure that people in the areas surrounding the capital can implement similar regulations.
This is because, according to him, vehicles entering Jakarta are not only from the capital's residents but also from residents of the surrounding DKI areas.
"Therefore, the handling will be integrated between Jakarta and the surrounding regions. This is one of the strategic stages, so it also needs support from the central government," he said.
It should be noted that the Environmental Agency has conducted emission tests on 1,692,618 vehicles. Of this total, 1,544,773 units were motorcycles and 147,845 units were cars.
The pass rate for tested cars reached 98.2 percent, while for two-wheeled vehicles it was 82.3 percent.
Previously, it was reported that the DKI Provincial Government, through the Environmental Agency, planned to prevent vehicles that fail emission tests from renewing their vehicle registration certificates (STNK). However, this policy is constrained by several factors, including the large number of agencies involved.
The DKI Government also does not want to burden the public with the policy of making emission tests a requirement for STNK renewal. Therefore, further studies still need to be conducted to understand the advantages and disadvantages of such a policy.
