KatadataOTO – People who intend to drive in the National Monument or Monas area should adjust their travel plans. This is because today, online motorcycle taxi drivers will be holding a demonstration in the area.
Therefore, the police have deployed at least 1,437 personnel to oversee the demonstration. The hope is that the demonstration can proceed peacefully and smoothly.
I emphasize that no officers will be carrying firearms. Serve our brothers and sisters who will be expressing their opinions humanely and professionally, but remain firm," said Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Police Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro, as reported by Antara (17/07).
The Police Chief also asked the protesters to remain orderly, not to resist officers, and not to damage public facilities while conveying their aspirations, in order to keep Jakarta safe and conducive.
As of the time this news was written, there are no plans for traffic diversions. Nevertheless, the public is advised to avoid the Monas intersection and find alternative routes so their mobility is not disrupted.
The crowd plans to gather at 13:00 WIB with a number of demands. These range from rejecting the status of drivers as laborers or workers to opposing the 10 percent deduction.
They are also urging the president to issue a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perpu) for online motorcycle taxis so that drivers have a clear legal basis in Indonesia.
It was previously reported that the Ministry of Transportation plans to adjust online motorcycle taxi fares. One of the proposals is that fares will increase by eight to 15 percent.
Related parties such as GoTo Gojek Tokopedia and Grab are likely to be affected. Because the fare increase could potentially reduce the number of orders from consumers.
Nevertheless, the Ministry of Transportation will still conduct various studies so as not to burden drivers and service users in the future.
“In drafting regulations, we are very careful and consider various aspects in order to accommodate the interests of all parties,” said Aan Suhanan, Director General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, in an official statement quoted on Friday (04/07).
