KatadataOTO – Toyota Eco Youth, a program initiated by PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) and PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), has been held.

It should be noted that the 13th Toyota Eco Youth is an event that gathers young people from various Senior High Schools (SMA) and Vocational High Schools (SMK).

Each school sends student representatives to participate in an eco-friendly innovation competition that supports environmental sustainability and a green future.

In total, 1,125 proposals were submitted from all over Indonesia. This covered 34 provinces and 338 schools.

“We hope this program continues to inspire environmental awareness movements among students and contribute together with the community, supporting the government's carbon neutrality target,“ said Nandi Julyanto, President Director of PT TMMIN in Jakarta, on Monday (25/08).

He emphasized that the younger generation is the key to Indonesia's future in realizing green and sustainable innovation.

There are five main categories contested in the Toyota Eco Youth: energy, waste, air, water, and others.

The Toyota Eco Youth kick-off began with outreach and training for the participants. The students received training on proposal writing methods, effective communication techniques, and an understanding of strategic issues.

The first-place winner of the 13th Toyota Eco Youth was SMA Negeri 1 Matauli Pandan with an innovation titled "The Effectiveness of Chitosan from Crab Shell Waste."

The technology aims to help the operations of local fishermen who need alternative electrical energy, so they no longer use fuel oil.

The innovation is simple, utilizing chitosan with seawater.

Thanks to this discovery, SMA Negeri 1 Matauli Pandan was entitled to a prize in the form of coaching funds worth Rp 100 million.

“This year, the 25 finalists proved that the innovative ideas of the younger generation, if well-facilitated, can be realized into tangible contributions for decarbonization,” said Henry Tanoto, President Director of PT TAM on the same occasion.

Toyota affirmed that the series of Toyota Eco Youth activities will continue in the future.

The hope is to create various new eco-friendly inventions, and have them implemented to help local communities and other parties in need.
