KatadataOTO – BYD (Build Your Dreams) is focusing on presenting electric cars or EVs (Electric Vehicles) in the Indonesian market. They are also in the process of building a factory so that a number of their models will later be locally assembled and receive incentives.

However, it is not impossible for BYD to bring in other electrification lines such as hybrid cars. Considering the government will provide special relief if the HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) models marketed meet a number of requirements.

This manufacturer from China has various PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) lines in its home country. Such as the pickup BYD Shark.

The double cabin car has also been registered in Indonesia. Referring to the official website of PDKI (Intellectual Property Database), the BYD Shark was registered with application number DID2024029221 on March 1, 2024, by BYD Company Limited.

However, it should be noted that registration is not a guarantee that a product will be launched in the country.

However, the chances are quite high, considering the BYD Shark made its Southeast Asian debut in Cambodia towards the end of October 2024. The double cabin pickup uses the name Shark 6. Not long after, towards the end of the year, the BYD Shark was introduced in Australia.

If it comes to Indonesia, there are currently no competitors using hybrid technology. All of them still use conventional engines like the Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, and Ford Ranger.

The government, through the Ministry of Industry, has previously urged manufacturers to carry out local production of double cabin pickups, as the import numbers are considered high.

So if BYD is interested in bringing in the Shark, it needs to consider whether the product will be imported or locally assembled at their facility in Subang.

The decision to produce locally is not taken lightly. Because manufacturers generally first look at the interest and sales potential in the domestic market.

For your information, the BYD Shark is a PHEV equipped with a 1,500 cc Turbo engine combined with a 29.58 kWh BYD Blade Battery.

With a fully charged battery and a full gas tank, the BYD Shark is claimed to be able to travel as far as 800 km.

In Australia, the BYD Shark is offered starting from 57,900 USD or around Rp 951.5 million in rupiah currency. For comparison, the double cabin pickup line in Indonesia, such as the Toyota Hilux GR Sport, is around Rp 700 million, while the most expensive is the Ford Ranger Raptor at Rp 1.21 billion.
