KatadataOTO – Not only in Indonesia, BYD will also establish an assembly plant in Malaysia. The facility will be built at KLK TechPark, Tanjong Malim, Perak.
BYD won't need much time to handle the permits for the construction. This is because Malaysia has the Muallim Speed-Lane program, launched in 2023, allowing all legalities to be completed in just three months.
The presence of this factory is believed to create jobs for the community and support technology transfer. It is even possible that the development of local companies will also be encouraged.
KLK TechPark is a 1,500-hectare industrial area owned by KLK Land. BYD plans to establish a production facility on a 150-hectare plot of land in the first phase.
The next phase is designed to attract vendors and a supporting ecosystem to become more complete and competitive. Unfortunately, as of this writing, there is no information on the production capacity or which cars will be made there.
Meanwhile in Indonesia, BYD is also building a production facility in Subang Smartpolitan. However, its size is smaller than the one in Malaysia, as it only stands on a 108-hectare plot of land.
To build it, the Chinese car manufacturer has to invest around IDR 16.2 trillion. The factory is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and is planned to start operations in early 2026.
The production capacity of the factory will be 150,000 units per year and it will create at least 18,000 jobs.
Not only that, the presence of the factory is also expected to make Indonesia one of the world's electric vehicle production bases. This is because BYD plans to export cars made in the country abroad.
“This facility will contribute to meeting the diverse needs of the domestic market while also expanding the potential for EV exports. This can support Indonesia's potential as one of the electrification vehicle manufacturing hubs in the Southeast Asian region,” affirmed Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific, some time ago.
