BYD Registers New Model Codenamed EQ, Strongly Suspected to be the Seagull

KatadataOTO – Some time ago, the name of the electric car BYD Dolphin Mini was registered by BYD Company Limited on the PDKI (Intellectual Property Database) page.

The Dolphin Mini itself is another name for BYD's cheapest electric car, the Seagull. This model is already marketed in various countries, the closest being Malaysia.

After the brand was registered, models with codes EQ-ETD-1 (4X2) AT and EQ-STD-1 (4X2) AT were listed on the Samsat-PKB page, with an NJKB (Motor Vehicle Sales Value) of IDR 233 million and IDR 218 million, respectively.

It is strongly suspected that both are the Dolphin Mini, also known as the Seagull. EQ itself is the model code for the Seagull.

It should be noted that the NJKB is not the selling price when marketed to the public. Because this figure does not yet include other costs such as taxes.

Compared to the Dolphin, which is BYD's cheapest electric car in Indonesia, the Seagull's NJKB is still lower.

In Malaysia, the BYD Dolphin Mini is offered starting from RM 99,900. In rupiah, this figure is equivalent to around IDR 367.7 million.

However, BYD Indonesia has not yet clearly revealed the newest electric car they will offer to consumers in the country.

The Dolphin Mini was previously expected to launch at the IIMS (Indonesia International Motor Show) 2025 event. However, the Chinese manufacturer brought the Sealion 7 instead.

For your information, the Seagull or Dolphin Mini has smaller dimensions than the Dolphin, measuring L x W x H 3,780 mm x 1,715 mm x 1,580 mm. Meanwhile, the Dolphin is 4,290 mm x 1,770 mm x 1,570 mm.

The model is touted as a new competitor to the Wuling Air ev. However, in terms of design, the Seagull appears more dynamic and resembles a hatchback.

Its configuration is not much different from the Wuling Air ev electric car. The Seagull uses a 30 kWh Blade Battery, offering a range of 300 km (NEDC) on a single charge.

Meanwhile, the Wuling Air ev, which is sold starting from IDR 180 million, is equipped with a 17.3 kWh to 26.7 kWh battery depending on the variant, with a range of 200 km-300 km.

If the BYD Seagull enters Indonesia with an import incentive scheme like the other three models, it is highly likely that its price will be competitive and close to the Wuling Air ev.
