KatadataOTO – Car sales in Indonesia from January to April 2025 are still held by Toyota. However, this performance is apparently different compared to neighboring countries like Singapore.

In the Lion City, BYD has successfully become the best-selling brand, beating Toyota, which has dominated the market for several years. This is the first time the Chinese company has dominated the market.

According to Reuters, from January to April 2025, BYD successfully sold at least 3,002 units. That number is equivalent to 20 percent of total car sales in Singapore,

Meanwhile, Toyota only managed to sell 2,050 units while Tesla sold 525 units in the same period.

This record is certainly a point of interest because throughout 2024, Toyota's sales were considered stable and dominated the Singaporean market. This is despite the country being known for its very strict vehicle ownership permits.

It was recorded that throughout 2024, Toyota successfully sold 7,876 units, more than BYD which only sold 6,191 units.

BYD's success in taking over the position of the best-selling manufacturer in Singapore in early 2025 shows the company's commitment to developing the market in Southeast Asia. This step was taken because the competition for electric vehicles in its home country is considered very tight.

BYD is even rumored to have a target of 50 percent of its sales coming from outside China by 2030. If this is achieved, it is not impossible for them to become one of the largest manufacturers in the world.

It should be noted that BYD entered Singapore in 2022, one year later than Tesla.

However, in 2023 their sales had far surpassed Tesla's. At that time, BYD managed to sell 1,416 units while its competitor only sold 941 units.

Besides Singapore, BYD's sales are also considered very strong in several Southeast Asian countries. In Indonesia, they have even become the best-selling electric car manufacturer.

Not stopping there, the company has also started building a factory in the Subang area, West Java. This production facility is believed to be able to strengthen their position in the country's automotive competition because the prices can be more affordable.
