KatadataOTO – Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Industry (Menperin), revealed that his party has received an investment commitment from Chery, the Chinese car manufacturer. The value is quite substantial, amounting to IDR 5.2 trillion by 2030.

The funds will reportedly be disbursed to build production facilities. Indonesia will later be made an EV export hub for Southeast Asia.

"This investment commitment shows Chery's seriousness in strengthening the national automotive industry, especially in low-emission and electric-based vehicles. The government continues to encourage the acceleration of this investment's realization,” said Agus Gumiwang in his official statement.

The funds actually began to be disbursed last year. However, it will be disbursed in stages until 2030, with the total reaching IDR 5.2 trillion.

Despite having secured the commitment, the Indonesian government still asks Chery to immediately submit a more detailed business plan for the next five years. Especially regarding the strengthening of production capacity and export strategies.

“We hope that Indonesia can become Chery's production and export base for electric vehicles for the ASEAN region,” said the Minister of Industry.

It should be noted that electric vehicle sales in Indonesia have indeed experienced a significant increase. Based on 2021 data, electric vehicle sales were only 0.08 percent of the total four-wheeled vehicle market.

However, that number has now increased to 10.22 percent of total car sales from January–August 2025. Chery itself has occupied the fourth position for brands with the highest BEV sales in Indonesia.

The government is encouraging Chery to expand its line of environmentally friendly vehicle products in Indonesia. The hope is that the public will have more choices according to their individual needs.

Additionally, the Ministry of Industry also asked Chery to make Indonesia its production base and export to ASEAN countries and Australia. This is because Chery is quite strong in Australia and has platform similarities with models produced in Indonesia.

Therefore, it is not impossible for the company to export from Indonesia, as has been done by other Japanese manufacturers.
