KatadataOTO – Although many believe that the future of electric vehicles is not as bright as predicted, its growth is still worth watching. Especially in several countries where governments continue to encourage the development of EVs for wider expansion.
Based on data from Rho Motion, the global EV market has seen a significant increase of 27 percent compared to last year.
From January to July 2025, at least 10.7 million EVs were successfully sold. Of this total, 6.5 million came from China.
The growth of electric vehicles in the Land of the Bamboo Curtain was 29 percent, while Europe recorded 2.3 million units. That number grew by 30 percent compared to the achievement from January to July 2024.
The significant growth is inseparable from Italy's policy of making it easier for its citizens to own electric cars.
Meanwhile, the North American region successfully sold around 1 million electric car units. This number is considered suboptimal as it only grew by 2 percent compared to the achievement in the same period last year.
“The United States has issued policies that are less favorable for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, the Canadian automotive market is indeed experiencing a slowdown,” said Charles Lester, Rho Motion Data Manager, in his official statement.
He also highlighted the United States automotive market, which is now more focused on developing hybrid vehicles. It is not impossible that this situation will cause a shift in public interest.
Nevertheless, other countries still experienced an increase of 42 percent to around 900 thousand units. Although the number is not significant, it shows that in countries outside that region, EVs have been widely accepted by the public.
In Indonesia itself, the sales of electric vehicles are quite large. In July 2025 alone, 4,336 units were successfully sold.
Of that total, BYD was the best-selling model with sales reaching 2,827 units, followed by Aion with 771 units and Denza with 423 units. This shows the great potential of the electric car market in the country.
