Hyundai Mobis showcased transparent display technology named HWD at CES 2025, which will be mass-produced starting in 2027.
KatadataOTO – CES 2025 (Consumer Electronic Show), which took place in Los Angeles, United States, was enlivened by various technological innovations, including in the automotive sector. Hyundai Mobis once again took part, presenting transparent car display screen technology.
For your information, Hyundai Mobis is a component supplier and official partner of Hyundai Motors.
The new technology debuted under the name HWD, or Holographic Windshield Display. Its three main elements are a specially designed windshield, a dashboard projector, and holographic optical elements.
How it works is quite simple. The optical element is placed at the bottom of the windshield and is designed to channel light, ensuring the windshield remains transparent while displaying important vehicle information.
Like the instrument panel and head unit in a car, the HWD can display everything from navigation to the speedometer.
According to Hyundai Mobis, this invention allows drivers to see information related to the car they are driving while staying focused on the road, as windshield visibility is maintained.
One of the highlighted features of this Hyundai Mobis-made HWD is its ability to provide separate, private displays for the driver and passenger. So, everyone in the cabin can see their own screen display.
“This ensures the driver cannot see the passenger's projector (display) and vice versa,” said Hyundai Mobis in its presentation, as quoted from Interesting Engineering, Wednesday (8/1).
Not just for entertainment support, the HWD is also claimed to help drivers maneuver more easily through the More Vision feature.
Its function is the same as a conventional 360-degree camera in the latest cars. However, the camera's feed is projected onto the windshield area.
“This feature helps the driver so they don't have to take their eyes off the road, increasing safety and also being more efficient,” explained Hyundai Mobis.
Lastly is the 3D navigation. The HWD system is equipped with several projectors, producing a 3D display that is again claimed not to obstruct the driver's view.
Hyundai Mobis plans to mass-produce the HWD system starting in 2027. At the CES 2025 event, they are partnering with the German optics company, Zeiss, to exclusively feature the HWD in the Kia EV9 electric car.
