Isuzu's multi-fuel engine enables commercial vehicles to use various types of fuel as needed.
KatadataOTO – Isuzu is one of the manufacturers at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 presenting a line of commercial vehicles.
However, it's not just vehicles; Isuzu also brought an engine innovation called the multi-fuel engine, an engine whose fuel can be adjusted.
Isuzu's multi-fuel engine still looks the same as a conventional one, with a capacity of 5,193 cc and the code 4HK1. However, some of its components can be attached and detached as needed.
“So we can change the necessary engine parts, it's very efficient,” said Yoshiki Yashiro, from Isuzu's Public Relations Group in Japan, on Wednesday (29/10).
He further explained that the multi-fuel engine is an effort to achieve carbon neutrality in the commercial vehicle segment.
The flexibility of using fuel as needed is ultimately considered capable of reducing various additional costs.
Included in the multi-fuel engine are three main components, which can be detached from the main engine block.
The first component is for bioethanol fuel, the second for biodiesel, and the last is specifically for biomethane.
Thus, a single commercial vehicle can use various environmentally friendly fuels.
It should be noted that Isuzu's multi-fuel engine has only been exhibited and is still in the development stage.
There is no information yet regarding the roadmap for Isuzu's 4HK1 multi-fuel engine. However, it is confirmed that the powertrain is designed to prioritize the needs of large commercial vehicles.
For your information, Isuzu is showcasing several innovations and concept vehicles at its booth during the Japan Mobility Show 2025 event.
One of them is the VCCC or Vertical Core Cycle Concept, a truck prototype used for transporting both passengers and cargo.
Also present at the same event was the latest version of the Giga heavy-duty truck. The product has received changes to its exterior and several of its interior features.
Then there is the Erga EV route bus concept, which has been equipped with Autonomous Driving technology and will be tested soon.
Isuzu's product line can be seen in person at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 event.
The biennial automotive exhibition is still ongoing at Tokyo Big Sight until this coming November 9.
