Not only the middle segment, luxury car sales also experienced a decline in the September 2025 period.
KatadataOTO – Retail car sales figures, or distribution from dealers to consumers, once again faced challenges in September 2025.
The lower-middle class has been the segment most affected by the recent economic instability.
However, sales of luxury cars as of September 2025 also appeared to face obstacles.
Gaikindo data shows that total retail sales of luxury cars throughout September 2025 were 588 units.
Among the seven luxury car brands, BMW remained in first place, delivering 258 vehicles to consumers.
That figure is a slight decrease of five percent compared to the retail sales figures in August.
Meanwhile, second place was still held by Lexus with 153 units, which also experienced a 16 percent decline.
Throughout September 2025, no brand experienced an increase in sales figures.
Gaikindo did not deny the overall decline in public purchasing power. However, in the luxury car segment, the impact was not as deep as for products in other classes like LCGC, LMPV, and the like.
“The public's purchasing power has not returned to normal,” said Jongkie Sugiarto, First Chairman of Gaikindo, to KatadataOTO on Monday (13/10).
Purchase postponements also tend to be made by upper-class consumers for several reasons.
For example, the rupiah's exchange rate against the dollar can affect the selling price of cars, especially imported products.
When the rupiah exchange rate is weak, the price of imported cars can soar higher.
Consumers are awaiting supporting regulations from the government to restabilize the exchange rate before making new car purchases in the upper segment.
However, the good news is there is an agreement between Indonesia and the European Union, regarding imported goods that could potentially lower the price of European cars imported into the country in the future.
This is because one of its policies is a 98.5 percent reduction in import duty costs for products from Europe to Indonesia.
If realized, this would certainly be a new attraction as the price of luxury cars would have the potential to decrease.
