KatadataOTO – Hyundai Indonesia has submitted a proposal for a 7-seater electric car concept model to be made a national car.

PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia (HMID) once expressed its interest in developing the Stargazer into an electric car. This is one of the potential models to be presented to consumers in the country.

When confirmed, the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) was still reluctant to provide further details regarding Hyundai's involvement in the National Strategic Project (PSN).

“For that, please ask Hyundai,” said Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, when met on the sidelines of GJAW 2025, Tangerang, Wednesday (26/11).

Hyundai itself has quite a large prospect thanks to its complete ecosystem in Indonesia. Ranging from vehicle assembly plants to battery factories.

However, the Minister of Industry emphasized that the one currently included in the PSN as a national car is Pindad, a tactical vehicle manufacturer that supplies the Garuda MV3 presidential car.

“The one appointed by the government to be the national car PSN is Pindad. As for Pindad's strategy, I already have an idea of it,” the Minister of Industry affirmed.

But he emphasized that certainty regarding the involvement of each brand in the national car project should be disclosed by the respective manufacturers.

“I think it's not appropriate for me to report or convey it to the public. Let Pindad report it themselves,” said the Minister of Industry.

For your information, the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) Hyundai Stargazer in Indonesia is only available with a conventional engine option. Its latest variant received an exterior update named Cartenz.

Seeing the positive trend of MPVs and electrification, Hyundai has expressed interest in preparing an electrified version of the Stargazer. However, it will take time as it involves joint development with Hyundai Korea.

"This is related to research and development (R&D) and our cooperation with global, whether the powertrain options will be suitable for the Indonesian people," said Franciscus Soerjopranoto, Chief Operating Officer of PT HMID in Tangerang some time ago.

Meanwhile, Pindad has the Pandu EV electric car. They are collaborating with KG Mobility Corporation to develop electric cars and buses.
