KatadataOTO – PT CSI (Chery Sales Indonesia) already has two electric car models for Indonesian consumers, namely the Omoda E5 and the J6.

However, recently, looking at data from Gaikindo (Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries), the wholesale figures for the J6 have skyrocketed, overtaking the Omoda E5.

In fact, in terms of retail (dealer to consumer), Chery revealed that the figure has reached more than 2,000 units since it was first launched in November 2024.

For comparison, the Chery Omoda E5, which debuted in February 2024, contributed 4,000 units in retail sales.

Looking at the wholesale figures (factory to dealer), as of January 2025, 423 units of the Chery J6 were distributed, while the Omoda E5 had 127 units. Then in February, the J6 recorded 634 units, followed by the Omoda E5 with 187 units.

“If we talk about the overall picture, the Omoda E5's (sales) are still number one because it has a total of over 4,000. The J6 is almost at 2,600, it's catching up quickly,” said Budi Darmawan, Sales Director of PT CSI in Jakarta some time ago.

According to Budi, besides consumer interest in the Chery J6's design, there are other factors behind the sales challenges for the Omoda E5.

“The EV (electric vehicle) segment in the Rp 400 million to Rp 500 million price range, I think almost everyone is playing there. This presents its own challenge for the Omoda E5,” said Budi.

Then, many Chinese manufacturers are introducing crossover SUVs (sport utility vehicles). Besides the Omoda E5, there are also the Kona Electric, Neta X, and MG 4 EV.

Meanwhile, for the J6, you could say it has no rivals yet. The Chery J6 carries an off-road SUV concept with a boxy appearance and a price of Rp 500 million and above.

However, Chery will continue to sell the Omoda E5 in the domestic market because it targets a different consumer segment than the J6.

“The presence of the J6 strengthens our EV (lineup) in Indonesia. If we look at it, consumers who buy the J6 are not running from the Omoda E5 because the segment is indeed different,” Budi emphasized.

For your information, in February 2025, the Chery J6 successfully ranked third among the best-selling electric cars (wholesales). Here is the complete data.
