KatadataOTO – Subaru is reportedly preparing a new electric car to fill the SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) segment. The new model is said to be targeting adventure enthusiasts.

Although there are no specific details about the off-road electric car yet, some time ago Subaru and Toyota confirmed a collaboration on a compact electric SUV.

Both brands will eventually sell the newest product in several countries, namely Japan, Europe, and North America.

“Get ready to meet Subaru's newest adventure companion: the all-new 2026 Subaru Trailseeker EV SUV,” read Subaru's official statement, quoted on Monday (14/04).

The actual electric car can be seen in person at the 2025 New York International Auto Show, from April 18-27, 2025.

It should be noted that this is not the first time a similar collaboration has occurred. When it comes to electric cars, the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra share the same platform.

The bZ4X and Solterra are produced at Toyota's assembly facility, the Motomachi Plant. Meanwhile, the Trailseeker EV will reportedly be produced at Subaru's factory, the Yajima Plant, starting in January 2026.

In terms of design, they still look identical. Another collaboration was done on the GR 86 and BRZ, although it is rumored that Mazda will replace Subaru for the future development of the GR 86.

So, looking at previous Toyota-Subaru collaborations, it is highly likely the Trailseeker EV will have a twin bearing a Toyota emblem, with slight differences in exterior design.

Furthermore, it is likely that Subaru will enhance the off-road feel of the electric car by adding a sporty body kit.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known if Subaru or Toyota are interested in bringing this model to Indonesian consumers.

Currently, the Toyota bZ4X is still offered in Indonesia and is priced at around Rp 1.2 billion on the road in Jakarta. However, Subaru does not sell its twin, the Solterra, and remains focused on gasoline-powered cars.

The Solterra is still the only Subaru model that is a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), or a pure electric car.

However, to catch up, Subaru is preparing an electrification plan that includes collaboration with Toyota.

In 2028, Subaru plans to launch its first internally developed electric car. The target is for BEVs to contribute 50 percent of Subaru's global sales by 2030.
