Sales Decline in Indonesia Draws Attention from Toyota Japan

The Toyota Urban Cruiser, a twin of the Vitara, has the potential to be sold in Indonesia at a lower price than the bZ4X.
KatadataOTO – PT TAM (Toyota Astra Motor) currently only has one pure electric vehicle model in the domestic market, the bZ4X. Not many Japanese manufacturers offer BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles) to consumers.
However, this is slowly changing. At the IIMS 2025 event, Suzuki confirmed that the e Vitara is set to enter Indonesia in early 2026.
It should be noted, the model was present at the IIMS 20224 exhibition as the eVX prototype. The precursor to the e Vitara was described as an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) suitable for urban mobility as well as tackling off-road terrain.
Toyota has its twin, still using the same platform as the e Vitara, namely the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. Its specifications are also believed to be not much different.
If it enters Indonesia, this model will add another electric car option for consumers, especially SUV enthusiasts. There is a high chance its price tag will be below the bZ4X.
When asked about the possibility of bringing the Urban Cruiser to the country, Toyota was still reluctant to provide more details.
“It’s still early in the year, we can't be specific. We strongly agree that Toyota should not only focus on developing more affordable hybrids, but also study new EVs,” said Anton Jimmi Suwandy, Marketing Director of PT TAM at JIExpo Kemayoran some time ago.
Not only that, Anton emphasized that the Japanese brand is also continuously conducting studies for the local production of electric cars in the future.
Considering the bZ4X in Indonesia is a CBU (Completely Built Up) import from Japan. Indeed, a manufacturer's decision to carry out local assembly needs to consider many things, one of which is sales volume.
“If all goes smoothly, hopefully we can introduce new products,” Anton affirmed.
For your information, the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV has a compact size, not much different from the Yaris Cross currently sold by PT TAM.
Its price is certain to be more competitive because it uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries. Meanwhile, the bZ4X, which is sold for Rp 1.19 billion, uses the Lithium-ion type.
There will be three types offered: a 49 kWh FWD (Front Wheel Drive) battery variant or a 61 kWh FWD and AWD (All Wheel Drive).
