Toyota Urban Cruiser EV Garners Positive Response, Will Be Assembled Locally

KatadataOTO – Toyota Urban Cruiser EV was introduced at GIIAS 2025 as the second electric car brought to Indonesia by PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM).

However, the presence of the Urban Cruiser EV is just an introduction. Toyota has not yet started taking orders.

The Japanese manufacturer is still reluctant to reveal its launch date. However, it claims that consumers have given a positive response.

“Many (consumers) are asking. We try to find out, every time there's a preview, what the acceptance and excitement level of the visitors is like,” said Jap Ernando Demily, Marketing Director of PT TAM, on the sidelines of GIIAS 2025, some time ago.

So far, according to him, many customers have been asking about the presence of the Urban Cruiser EV in Indonesia. But the company is still unable to disclose its price range for when it is officially launched.

Toyota also opened up the possibility of the Urban Cruiser EV being locally assembled, just like the bZ4X.

According to Ernando, the stages will follow the bZ4X. When it was first launched, the model was a completely built-up (CBU) import.

As time went on and the ecosystem developed, the Toyota bZ4X was then assembled domestically.

“At Toyota, before a new product is launched, the spare parts must be fully available, both in TAM's warehouses, depots, and dealerships. We don't want to be unprepared when it's sold and something happens,” said Ernando.

In addition, he said other preparations are needed, one of which is financing options for consumers who buy the Urban Cruiser EV on credit or in installments.

The hope is that when the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV is launched, the entire ecosystem, including Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) and after-sales services, will be ready to accommodate the owners' needs.

“So that becomes one of our concerns and strategies (for marketing the Urban Cruiser EV),” Ernando affirmed.

For your information, the Urban Cruiser EV was previously registered in the Regulation of the Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Number 7 of 2025 concerning the Basis for Imposing Motor Vehicle Tax, Motor Vehicle Title Transfer Fees, and Heavy Equipment Tax for the Year 2025.

It lists the Urban Cruise A/T (SZ181CR-ZG12) with a Motor Vehicle Sales Value (NJKB) of around IDR 616 million.
