Toyota claims it will collaborate with a third party for the development of the Veloz Hybrid battery.
KatadataOTO – Toyota's hybrid vehicle lineup, such as the Kijang Innova Zenix, uses batteries that are locally assembled with most of their components imported.
However, for their newest product, the Veloz Hybrid, Toyota revealed that it will partner with a third party for battery development.
“In the future, we will have a partnership for battery manufacturing,” said Nandi Julyanto, President Director of PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), when met in Jakarta on Monday (25/08).
Although he did not disclose it explicitly, it is highly likely that the battery in question is the result of a strategic partnership with the Chinese manufacturer, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL).
In 2023, a Toyota representative confirmed that they would partner with CATL to build an electric vehicle battery industry in Indonesia.
Collaboration between CATL and Japanese manufacturers is not new. The Chinese manufacturer is also known to supply batteries to brands like Honda and Nissan.
Located in Karawang, CATL's domestic production facility was inaugurated by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in June 2025 and is targeted for completion next year.
Not only for domestic electrified cars, the 15 GWh capacity CATL factory is also targeted to supply the needs of the global market.
If the Toyota Veloz Hybrid is produced in Karawang and uses batteries from CATL, then its final selling price could potentially be lowered and become more competitive.
However, Nandi is still keeping information about the price range of the Toyota Veloz Hybrid under wraps for its future launch.
“The price is the distributor's business. We follow the distributor,” he said.
Speaking of differences from the previous model, the Veloz Hybrid is said to offer fuel efficiency as the main differentiator from its conventional variant.
“The efficiency is better, roughly similar to or the same as the Yaris Cross,” said Nandi.
For your information, the Toyota Veloz Hybrid will be launched next year to fill the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) segment.
According to sales personnel, the price is likely to be in the range of Rp 300 million and above, making it an alternative to the Innova Zenix Hybrid.
It is even said that consumers interested in purchasing the Veloz Hybrid can already start placing pre-orders by preparing a sum of around Rp 5 million.
