BMW AG is suing BYD Indonesia over the M6 trademark, with legal proceedings and the trial still ongoing until April 2025.
KatadataOTO – Recently, the automotive world was stirred by news of a lawsuit from BMW against BYD Indonesia, related to the BYD M6 electric car brand marketed in the country.
The reason is, M6 itself is the name of one of BMW's model lines and has been on the road longer, and is known as the owner of the M6 brand, a high-performance 6 series.
BYD has confirmed the lawsuit. However, when KatadataOTO contacted them for details and the continuation of the case, we have not received a response.
Meanwhile, a BMW representative revealed that the matter is still in the legal process and has not been resolved.
The lawsuit, listed under number 19/Pdt.Sus-HKI/Merek/2025/PN Niaga Jkt.Pst, can be accessed on the Central Jakarta Commercial Court's website, was registered on February 26, 2025, and is being handled by the legal counsel of BMW AG.
“Because this is indeed a lawsuit from BMW AG, and all processes are ongoing. The next hearing will be in April,” said Jodie O’tania, Director of Communications for BMW Group Indonesia, when met by reporters in South Tangerang on Monday (24/03).
She continued that the legal procedure is still proceeding according to regulations. Therefore, her party cannot comment too much on the details of the lawsuit.
Jodie emphasized that her party believes the law in Indonesia can help protect BMW's intellectual property rights, in this case, the M6 brand.
“Because we have (BMW) M6 customers, we also don't want there to be confusion in the market. So our goal is to protect the brand, BMW's intellectual property,” Jodie asserted.
Regarding the possibility of BYD changing its vehicle's name in the future, Jodie was still reluctant to say much.
“I can't comment much, because the process is still ongoing. It's still very early to give a comment,” she said.
For your information, BYD uses the name M6 for their electric-powered MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) in the country.
The car is touted as an electric MPV with the most competitive price, starting from the Rp 379 million to Rp 429 million range, and has become one of the best-selling EVs (Electric Vehicles) in the country.
