KatadataOTO – The automotive sector has once again hit a stumbling block. This is being felt by the two-wheeled vehicle industry in January 2025.

According to data from AISI (Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association) on Monday (10/02), motorcycle sales last month experienced a decline.

In January 2025, only 557,191 units were recorded for the domestic market. This number decreased by 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

However, a different situation was shown for the export market. Last month, it increased to 41,489 units.

Of course, the achievement above needs to be a concern for many parties. Because a number of factors are touted as the culprits for the sluggish new motorcycle sales at the beginning of 2025.

For example, economic conditions have not fully recovered. Then, the rupiah exchange rate against the dollar is still quite high.

Then, the discourse on implementing a 12 percent VAT (Value Added Tax) is also considered to affect the purchasing power of the people in the country.

In addition, the lack of clarity on the implementation of the PKB (Motor Vehicle Tax) and BBNKB (Vehicle Title Transfer Fee) surcharges in several regions also made consumers postpone buying a new motorcycle in January 2025.

Even though AISI had hoped that new motorcycle sales this year could continue to grow and be vibrant amidst the difficult situation.

“We really hope it can be positive. Better than last year,” said Sigit Kumala, Head of the Commercial Division of AISI to KatadataOTO recently.

Sigit also asked for more regions to provide relief for the PKB and BBNKB surcharges. As implemented by Jakarta, Central Java, West Java, and East Java.

This is important to boost new motorcycle sales in Indonesia throughout 2025. Thus, it can provide many positive impacts.

Automatic Scooters Continue to Dominate

On the other hand, automatic scooters remain unshaken in the domestic two-wheeled vehicle market share. As they contribute up to 93.75 percent.

Meanwhile, the second place is occupied by the underbone or moped model, successfully contributing 3.37 percent.

Finally, in third place, are sport motorcycles. Throughout January 2025, they managed to capture a market share of 2.89 percent.
