KatadataOTO – The Indonesian automotive industry is once again in the spotlight. This is because new motorcycle sales in January 2025 were quite sluggish.
Several factors are considered to be the cause of this condition. For instance, the proposed implementation of a surcharge on PKB (Motor Vehicle Tax) and BBNKB (Vehicle Title Transfer Fee).
“Well, it's not a drastic drop, but we did see a decline,” said a salesperson for Yamaha in Bogor Regency, West Java to KatadataOTO on Sunday (09/02).
He stated that their income decreased due to the issue of implementing the BBNKB and PKB surcharge in Bogor.
This has caused people to postpone purchasing new motorcycles at the beginning of the year. Thus, it has significantly affected them.
Unfortunately, this salesperson did not explain the detailed number of the decline in new motorcycle sales at their dealership last month.
“Approximately 10 percent (from the usual income), which is quite significant,” he said.
He hopes that this situation will end soon. So that the sales of new two-wheeled vehicles can become vibrant again.
For your information, AISI previously reported that the new motorcycle market experienced a decline in January 2025.
They recorded a figure of only 557,191 units for the domestic market. This number decreased by 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 2024.
Meanwhile, the export market increased to 41,489 units. Whereas in January 2024, it was at the level of 34,991 two-wheeled vehicles.
It should be noted that the West Java provincial government is also implementing the PKB and BBNKB surcharge, in accordance with Law Number 1 of 2022.
It explains the HKPD (Financial Relations between the Central and Regional Governments). This was then derived into Perda (Regional Regulation) 9 of 2023 concerning Regional Taxes and Regional Levies.
Nevertheless, the local government has provided some good news. They are providing relief for motorcycle and car owners.
“The good news is, there is no increase in the amount of vehicle tax and title transfer fees in West Java Province,” wrote Bapenda or the West Java Regional Revenue Agency on their Instagram account.
Therefore, the public does not need to worry about the implementation of the PKB and BBNKB surcharge that is in effect this year.
You can still fulfill your obligations affordably, without any additional costs when you want to pay the tax.
