The Jakarta Transportation Agency is preparing Rp 120 billion worth of technology to address traffic congestion in the capital.

KatadataOTO – Traffic congestion in the Capital City is caused by many things. One of them is the static and non-adaptive regulation at road intersections
This situation is considered to cause vehicle queues to become longer and not in accordance with needs.
"If the regulation at an intersection is static, it can happen that a road with high vehicle traffic volume only gets a short green light," said Syafrin Liputo, Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, as reported by Antara (04/07).
Conversely, that road gets a long red light, causing long queues.
Therefore, the DKI Transportation Agency in Jakarta plans to equip a number of intersections with Intelligent Traffic Control System (ITCS) technology. With this, traffic lights will become adaptive to traffic movements at each intersection.
"So that obstacles at intersections can be minimized or even eliminated," said Syafrin.
ITCS technology allows for real-time data-based traffic regulation. Interestingly, the system is already integrated with electronic ticketing (ETLE), making congestion management in Jakarta more effective and have a wider impact.
The implementation will be carried out in three stages: short-term (0-2 months) including the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the utilization of ITCS data and the initial operation of five ITCS intersections.
Then the medium-term (6-12 months) which includes the start of electronic law enforcement for traffic violations, taxes, and emission tests.
Next is the long-term (more than 12 months) where in this phase the transportation agency will install ITCS at 321 intersections. All will be integrated with the Low Emission Zone (KRE) and Electronic Traffic Control (PL2SE).
With adaptive and real-time traffic light timing, vehicle flow becomes more dynamic and congestion decreases significantly.
This technology cannot be said to be cheap because the Transportation Agency has to spend at least Rp 120 billion. This amount is only enough to build ITCS at 25 intersections by the end of the year.
"This year we are not adding to the budget. So we will use the existing funds from the original regional budget,"
