KatadataOTO – Toyota Eco Youth is an event initiated by PT Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), providing a platform for outstanding students to produce sustainable innovations.

One that has drawn considerable attention is SMA Negeri 1 Matauli Pandan, the champion of the 13th Toyota Eco Youth.

The innovation presented at the 13th Toyota Eco Youth was titled The Effectiveness of Chitosan from Blue Swimming Crab Shell Waste.

Motivated by the large amount of crab shell waste in their area, amounting to 109 tons per year, students from SMA Negeri 1 Matauli Pandan created a device to help stationary lift net fishermen.

It should be noted that stationary lift net fishermen use fishing gear that is fixed in shallow waters.

In their operations, they need other tools such as lamps for lighting. However, their lighting system requires fossil fuels.

“The raw material for the electric generator is fossil fuel, which is expensive and not environmentally friendly,” said Shadeq Fikri Nasution, a representative from SMA Negeri 1 Matauli Pandan, when met on the sidelines of the Toyota Eco Youth Awarding, Monday (25/08).

He said his team also conducted a survey first to see the main obstacles faced by the stationary lift net fishermen there.

Then, by utilizing available and abundant materials, namely blue swimming crab shells, the innovation began.
