KatadataOTO – The DKI Jakarta government, through the Transportation Agency, is actively working to address parking issues in the capital city. Especially since many people park their vehicles on sidewalks, obstructing pedestrians.
Fortunately, parking is no longer considered a source of locally-generated revenue for the provincial government. Therefore, the agency can take several concrete steps, including reducing on-street parking locations.
“Parking is no longer an instrument for local revenue. Therefore, out of the 440 streets designated for parking, the number has been reduced to only 244,” said Syafrin Liputo, Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency, in his official statement (26/06).
He even revealed that the number of streets that can be used as parking locations will continue to be reduced. This will allow for more optimal traffic management.
Not only that, they are also strengthening coordination with various parties to prevent illegal parking. Additionally, outreach to area managers is being optimized to ensure they apply parking rates according to regulations.
“For example, on Jalan Kyai Tapa, many motorcycles used to park on the sidewalk. After we approached them, the parking rate, which was originally Rp 4,000 - 5,000 per day, was lowered to Rp 2,000 to encourage riders to park inside the campus area,” Syafrin revealed.
Furthermore, he plans to collaborate with several parties to address the widespread illegal parking in various locations. It is hoped that the enforcement process will run smoothly and remain optimal.
"To tackle illegal parking, we will synergize and collaborate with all stakeholders, both internal, such as the ranks of the Satpol PP (Public Order Agency), mayors, to the TNI-Polri (Military-Police)," Syafrin affirmed.
Meanwhile, Pramono Anung, Governor of DKI Jakarta, also promised to continue cracking down on illegal parking throughout Jakarta. According to him, the situation has been disrupting the city's order.
"I will order a crackdown on illegal parking. Because this habit cannot be maintained in Jakarta," said Pramono in an official statement (26/06).
It was previously reported that the tires of about 80 motorcycles belonging to Trisakti University students were deflated for parking on the sidewalk and obstructing pedestrians. The action was taken to create a deterrent effect and prevent recurrence.
