Jakarta Transportation Department Reviews Car Free Night on Sudirman Thamrin

KatadataOTO – The cancellation of the Car Free Night trial some time ago apparently had a significant impact. This is because if the event had been successful, it would have served as a reference for future implementations.

The DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency also acknowledged that various studies are still needed to be able to hold a Car Free Night. Starting from the location to the impacts caused by the activity.

“Currently, we are continuously conducting studies so that the determination of the CFN location meets aspects related to the sustainability of the program's implementation and does not disrupt other existing activities,” said Syafrin Liputo, Head of the Transportation Agency, as reported by Antara (10/07).

He even revealed that they are making comparisons with Car Free Nights in other countries. One of them is Hong Kong, which is considered quite successful.

“In Hong Kong, Car Free Night is not held on the main roads but in surrounding locations that are deemed to need economic activity,” said Syafrin.

Meanwhile, activities on the main roads should not be disturbed. This is because the activity level is quite high, so it must continue as usual.

For that reason, Syafrin said his party is continuing to conduct in-depth studies before implementing CFN in Jakarta.

“We hope we can get optimal results for its implementation in Jakarta,” he said.

It was previously reported that the Car Free Night trial and the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025 torch parade in the M.H. Thamrin and Jenderal Sudirman areas on Saturday (05/07) night were canceled.

“After considering various aspects, the DKI Provincial Government has decided to cancel the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025," said Cyril Raoul Hakim, Special Staff to the Governor of DKI Jakarta for Public Communications, as reported by Antara (04/07).

Initially, the Car Free Night trial and the Jakarta Muharram Festival 2025 torch parade were scheduled to be held from 18:00 – 22:00 WIB. The route was from the Southwest Gate of the Monas Cross to the Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout via the Bank Indonesia Roundabout and MH Thamrin street.

However, after considering traffic flow and the routine evening and night activities of residents, the DKI Provincial Government canceled the event.
