KatadataOTO – Operation Lilin, which was held from December 21, 2024, was officially closed on January 2, 2025. During the operation, the police recorded a decrease in the number of accidents compared to a similar operation during the previous Christmas and New Year holidays.
The recorded number of accidents was only 2,497 incidents, lower than the previous 2,842 incidents. The number of fatalities also decreased by 13 percent.
“Fatalities due to accidents decreased by 55 people compared to last year,” said Inspector General Aan Suhanan, Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, as reported by Antara (03/01).
However, he admitted that there were several challenges in this year's operation. One of them was the significant surge in vehicles during the Christmas and New Year exodus and return flows.
He explained that the peak of the exodus flow occurred on Saturday (12/21). At that time, 195,000 vehicles left the Jabotabek area.
Meanwhile, the peak of the return flow occurred on Sunday (12/29) with 189,000 vehicles re-entering the Jabotabek area.
“We made various efforts, including securing arterial roads and toll roads, which resulted in the smooth traffic flow experienced by the public during the exodus and return flows. This is the result of the hard work of all parties,” he said.
In addition to accidents, the crime trend during the operation was also considered to have decreased quite significantly.
“From around 14,000 cases previously, there are now approximately 13,000 cases during the operation. This means a decrease of about 5 percent,” he then added.
This improvement was inseparable from the large number of officers deployed during the operation. At least 132,327 personnel were recorded to have been deployed during Operation Lilin 2024.
The deployment of personnel coincided with the establishment of 2,794 security posts aimed at ensuring the smooth flow of public activities during the holiday period.
Although Operation Lilin has ended, the police will continue to provide security as the return flow is considered not yet fully over. In fact, on January 4 and 5, an increase in traffic flow towards Jabotabek is expected.
Therefore, the Police, in cooperation with Jasa Marga, will monitor public movement and prepare traffic engineering if necessary.
