KatadataOTO – Rano Karno, the Deputy Governor, wants drivers of public and goods transport to have high competence. This aims to reduce the rate of traffic accidents especially in DKI Jakarta.

Although traffic accidents are not only caused by drivers, it must be acknowledged that their role in driving safety is very important.

"This is to help maintain the safety of road users and support the realization of traffic order and security in Jakarta," he said, as reported by Antara (11/08).

He also reminded that vehicle drivers have a role in reducing the rate of traffic accidents. The more skilled they are in controlling their vehicles, the safer their driving is expected to be.

"Drivers of public transport and goods transport need to have good driving skills and attitudes to reduce the fatality rate from traffic accidents," he said.

Rano revealed that problems in the transportation sector are caused by various factors, including humans. Human error is often the biggest cause of traffic violations and accidents.

Therefore, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is encouraging an increase in driver competence. This is done by holding the DKI Jakarta Provincial Level Exemplary Public Service Driver Selection event.

The event aims to select the most competent drivers. The winner will later represent DKI Jakarta Province at the national level event organized by the Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia in September 2025.

"This is also a form of appreciation for drivers who have shown dedication and exemplary behavior in carrying out their duties, as well as proof of the important role of drivers in building a culture of safe, orderly, and ethical traffic," he emphasized.

It should be noted that from January to June 2025, the number of accidents in Indonesia was 70,749 incidents. This number is lower than the same period in 2024, which saw 72,638 incidents.

The decrease in accidents also had a positive impact, as the number of fatalities fell from 13,781 in 2024 to 11,262 in 2025.

However, this does not mean the government can relax. This is because traffic accidents are still one of the problems that must be addressed and receive attention from many parties.
